SECTION – A
(READING) (Marks : 20)
1. Read
the passage given below: (12)
1. During his
recent visit to India, the world golf champion Tiger Woods was all praise for
the players at the Delhi Golf Club. As golf gains ground as a corporate sport
in India, many top-level Indian corporate will be heading for a game with
professionals, such as Tiger Woods. Participating in these events, where
amateurs play with professionals, comes for a hefty fee.
2. The long-term
advantages of these fleeting interactions on the golf course with
professionals, are debatable. But for corporates, playing besides a powerhouse
of talent can definitely up their game. This was the general opinion even among
the spectators who had watched Tiger Woods in Delhi. Munjal, the amateur player
along with him, was also impressed with this game.
3. But those who
cannot afford the hefty charges of a top professional, investing in their game
by hiring a professional coach has benefits. According to other goal
consultants, a number of Indians are also attending ‘golf clinics’ abroad for
specific programmes to improve their game. According to Butch Harmon the
professional, who has worked with Tiger Woods and had even helped five American
Presidents improve their game, a short course generates more power in the swing
and in aligning shots. These changes like tweaking the position of the hand on
the club, or learning how to aim your body before swinging the club, can be
mastered during these short-term interactions, yield results.
4. Another way for
Indian golfers to keep connected internationally is through the online golf
community. According to Sandeep Sarkar, who has been travelling abroad to train
for the last six years, his experience at the British coach David Leadbetter’s
academy was most fruitful. ‘They showed me a video of my game and I saw how bad
I was in some positions.’
5. As golf is a
technical game, unlike football or other sports, playing every day will not
necessarily improve one’s game. Hence, amteur golfers are also travelling to
Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore and Dubai, for sessions that combine a
three-day course play with a one-day clinic with a professional golfer. This is
a huge improvement from the standard of coaching available in India. As most
Indian trainers are caddies turned coaches, they teach by trial and error. That
kind of training does not work for corporate who are short on time. Besides,
most of these coaches are themselves medium-quality players who don’t have the
claim that their game has become consistent after training at these academies.
6. But others
caution against expecting too much from these coaching sessions. They argue
that one cannot buy a golf swing and the effort that goes into remodelling it
from attending a coaching session, however sophisticated and technically
perfected it might be. Besides, most amateurs in India are not aiming to play
like the champs. They play to enjoy themselves. Even the professionals who come
to play exhibition matches such as the one in which Tiger Woods participated,
the aim is slightly different. According to Munjal, who had hosted Tiger’s
visit to India, the world champion had not really come to demonstrate his play
or to coach. The world champion had long wanted to make the trip to simply
enjoy sights and sounds and perhaps play a game or two on the side.

2. Read the passage given below (8)
1. The
term dietary fibres refers collectively to indigestible carbohydrates present
in plant foods. The importance of these dietary fibres came into the picture
when it was observed that the people having diet rich in these fibres, had low
incidence of coronary heart disease, irritable bowel syndrome, dental caries
and gallstones.
2. The food-stuff rich inthese dietary
fibres are cereals and grains, legumes, fruits with seeds, citrus fruits,
carrots, cabbage, green leafy vegetables, apples, melons, peaches, pears etc.
3. These dietary fibres are not digested
by the enzymes of the stomach and the small intestine whereas most of other
carbohydrates like starch and sugar are digested and absorbed. The dietary
fibres have the property of holding water and because of it, these get swollen
and behave like a sponge as these pass through the gastrointestinal tract. The
fibres add bulk to the diet and increase transit time in the gut. Some of these
fibres may undergo fermentation in the colon.
4. In recent years, it has been considered
essential to have some amount of fibres in the diet. Their beneficial effects
lie in preventing coronary heart disease, and decreasing cholesterol level. The
fibres like gums and pectin are reported to decrease post-prandial (after
meals) glucose level in blood. These types of dietary fibres are recommended
for the management of certain types of diabetes. Recent studies have shown that
the fenugreek (methi) seeds, which contain 40 percent gum, are effective in
decreasing blood glucose and cholesterol levels as compared to other gum
containing vegetables.
5. Some dietary fibres increase transit
time and decrease the time of release of ingested food in colon. The diet
having less fibre is associated with colon cancer and the dietary fibres may
play a role in decreasing the risk of it.
6. The dietary fibres hold water so that
stools are soft, bulky and readily eliminated. Therefore high fibre intake
prevents or relieves constipation.
7. The fibres increase motility of the
small intestine and the colon and by decreasing the transit time there is less
time for exposure of the mucosa to harmful toxic substances. Therefore, there
is a less desire to eat and the energy intake can be maintained within the
range of requirement. This phenomenon helps in keeping a check on obesity.
Another reason in helping to decrease obesity is that the high-fibre diets have
somewhat lower co-efficients of digestibility.
8. The dietary fibres may have some
adverse effects on nutrition by binding some trace metals like calcium,
magnesium, phosphorus, zinc and others and therefore preventing their
absorption. This may pose a possibility of nutritional deficiency especially when
diets contain marginal levels of mineral elements. This may become an important
constraint on increasing dietary fibres. It is suggested that an intake of 40
grams dietary fibres per day is desirable.
(a) On the basis of your understanding of the above passage make notes on it, using headings and subheadings. Use recognizable abbreviations (wherever necessary- minimum four) and a format you consider suitable. Also apply a suitable title to it. (4)
(b)
Write a summary of the passage in about 80 words. (4)

:Poor condition of state transport bus.
Sir
Through
the columns of your esteemed newspaper I would like to draw the attention of
the concerned authorities and especially of the General Manager of the
maintenance department of the State Transport buses towards the problem of the
poor maintenance of the Transport Buses and the inconvenience caused to the
travelers.
It
is very shameful that the State Transport Authorities are careless about their
passenger. Though it is a good revenue generator but it seems that the
government is not bothered about revenue nor is it cares for the public. The
condition of the buses is very poor. The air-conditioners are not working
properly; seats are torn, and windows are broken and unclean. In such weather
when mercury is on the boil, non-working A.C. causes a lot of trouble to the
passengers and the irony is, the driver and conductor have to bear the brunt of
people’s anger. I, myself faced this problem when I was travelling to
Thiruvalluvur from Chennai. The heat was unbearable.
Therefore,
I request the concerned authorities to take strict measures to resolve this
issue otherwise people may choose private buses which ultimately will result in
revenue loss for the government. As a responsible citizen I recommend that a
stitch in time saves nine so a quick remedy will definitely be good.
Thanking
you

Sir
Most
humbly with reference to the subject cited above I would like to state that I
am the Store Incharge of the Goodwill Public School and keep track of all the
orders received and sent.
We
have been your customer for the last 10 years and your products and services
have always been good. You never compromised with quality but I regret to say that
for the last two deliveries both your products and services were very poor. The
biscuits which we give to our children as part of their breakfast were all
sodden and crushed. Moreover, the number of packets didn’t tally the list we
ordered. There were ten packets less in the delivery. We reminded you when you
committed the same mistake earlier but you instead of rectifying the mistake,
have repeated the mistake.Your goodwill and reputation in the market doesn’t
allow such kind of grave mistake from your side.
You
must realize that your carelessness may result in a big issue affecting the
health of the children. We are responsible for our children and we cannot
afford to have such mistakes again and again.
Therefore,
I request you to give a serious thought to this matter and ensure that this
kind of mistake won’t happen again otherwise we’ll be compelled to terminate
our long-found relationship.
We
are sending you the latest consignment back and hope that you will replace it
soon.

6. Presently
the prices of essential commodities are skyrocketing causing much hardship to
the common man. Write an article in 150 – 200 words expressing your views and
suggesting measures to curb this problem. (10)
The Ever Rising Prices
By- xyz
Out
of the many problems that India is facing today, rising prices is the most
intricate. Over the past several years it has become a chronic malady in
India’s national life. They have given rise to widespread distress especially
among people who are living hand to mouth and the lower middle class people.
The
persistent increase in the items of daily necessity has increased the number of
people living below poverty line. Constantly rising prices are like fire
feeding on itself. On the one hand they erode the income of the wage earners
and on the other hand they give rise to labour unrest which in turn brings down
the productivity leading to further price rise. The rich get richer and the
poor get poorer.
All
the wrong practices such as- hoarding, black marketing, profiteering and
corruption are encouraged by rising prices. They devalue currency and disrupt
equitable distribution of wealth.
The
problem is serious and it needs measures to be adopted. The government should
tackle the problem of rising prices on a war footing. The black marketers and
profiteers should be dealt severely. The public distribution system of
commodities should be made more efficient. The govt. should seriously boost the
marketing and sales of its agricultural products. The policy makers should keep
the poor section in mind as they are the main victims of price rise.
OR
Advertisements have become a big business. They
are promoted by celebrities drawn from various fields like films, sports etc.
leaving their influence on all people specially the young. Write an article in
150- 200 words on “The impact of advertisements on the younger generation.” (10)
The Impact Of Advertisements On Younger Generation
By- xyz
Advertisements
are basically meant to influence the minds of people in such a way that the
purchase of the advertised product increases. The advertisement industry spends
billions of dollars to promote various products and brands through
advertisements. It is a pure business where the owner of a firm invests capital
to earn profits through the sales of his products. Children become the main
target of advertisers since they belong to most naïve and easily influenced
category of the society.
Some
of the most visible effects of advertisement on children are both positive and
negative. Advertising makes the kid aware of the new products available in the
market. It increases their knowledge about the latest innovations in the field
of technology. Convincing advertisements which centre around healthy food
products can help improve the diet of a child. Certain advertisements with
strong messages motivate the children in chasing their future prospects such as
becoming a doctor, engineer etc. They generate the passion in children and make
them realize the importance of education. Some advertisements inculcate good
habits in children such as all toothpaste companies create strong awareness
regarding dental hygiene in children.
encourage the children to persuade their parents to purchase the products shown
in commercials whether useful or not. The children tend to get adamant to buy
the product. Children often misinterpret the message conveyed in the
commercials. They overlook the positive side and concentrate more on negative
side. Many advertisements in the present times include dangerous stunts which
can be performed only by experts. Even though they broadcast the statutory
warning with them, the kids often try to imitate them at home with fatal
results. The flashy advertisement broadcast generates impulse shopping in
children. The kids usually get more attracted towards costly branded products
and disregard the inexpensive but useful one. Advertisements have an indirect effect
on the behaviour of the children. They might develop temperamental tantrums
when deprived of latest toys and clothes. Junk foods such as pizza, burger and
soft drinks are heavily promoted during the children’s programmes. This
develops a craving for fast foods in the children thereby affecting their
health adversely. These unhealthy eating habits lead to problems such as
obesity. Sometimes the advertisements are related to the use of tobacco,
alcohol which create a negative impression on the children.
It
is very important for parents to teach children the value of money. The child
should be educated on difference between ‘needs’ and ‘wants’. Parents should
keep a strict watch on their children’s behaviour. Teaching the child how to be
critical of ads by picking flaws in them is very important.
7. Science
attempts to explore the secrets of nature while religion wants to reveal the
very purpose of existence. The aim of both science and religion is to discover
the truth. Write a speech in 150 -200 words on ‘Science and Religion’. Suppose
yourself to be Rakshit or Raksha of Class XII. (10)
Respected
principal sir, teachers and my dear friends I, Rakshit of Class XII is going to
express my views on ‘Science and Religion.’
What
could science have in common with religion when religion seems so irrelevant to
the scientists? But even today in this age of science and technology majority
of people in this world believe in religion. The advancement of science and
technology has made people only more rational towards religion
Science
and religion are two different aspects of life. Both have their own importance
and value. In the beginning, especially, science had always been at the daggers
drawn with religion. In every sphere of life, religion was considered all
important and it reigned supreme. Gradually religion was overtaken by science.
Today we can say, science is equally important as religion or to put it better,
science is more important than religion.
There
are basic differences between the outlook of science and religion. The outlook
of science is rational. It believes in experiment and observation. It teaches
its followers that nothing is to be believed until it is proved through
experiment and observation. Religion, on the other hand is the matter of faith.
It teaches its followers to believe and have faith in the teachings of
religious teachers and the authority of religious books. Thus whatever is
written in ‘Vedas’ or ‘Gita’ is true for it is the word of God Himself. The
existence of God cannot be proved but it can be felt by those who have faith.
Scientific
truths are tentative. Science believes that nothing is absolutely true. What is
regarded as true today may be proved to be false the very next day by
experiments and observations. Thus there was a time when the earth was supposed
to be motionless and the sun was supposed to go round the earth. But later it
was proved wrong and science showed us that it is the earth that revolves round
the sun.
In
the end it may be said that religion is a social phenomenon as well as personal
and individual. Science has weakened religion as a social phenomenon but in its
personal and individual sphere, science has not even been able to touch it.
There are people whose faith in religion is unshaken and can do maximum
sacrifice in the name of religion. Therefore it is wrong to say that science
has made man irreligious.
OR
Write a debate on
‘Euthanasia or Mercy Killling should be Legalized’ in 150-200 words. Present
your views either for or against the motion. (10)
Respected Chairperson, members of the jury and my dear friends I am going to express my views for the motion ‘Euthanasia or Mercy Killing should be Legalized.’
I
strongly support this idea as in my opinion it is a kind of help to the person
who undergoes a great agony and also to them who see their relative deteriorating
and dying. It is cruel and heartless to keep such patients alive who are
terminally ill without any hope of survival. Except satisfying ones emotions,
it serves no other purpose. But the question is, should we become so
self-centric that just for the sake of our sentiments, we should ignore the
patient and others whom we can help. The resources used for such a person, if
freed, can be used by those who need them more. Even our legal system says that
one has a right to choose when to die. After all as independent biological
entities we have a right to take and carry out decisions about ourselves.
When
a person is sick, he contains the agents of the disease within him so as long
as he is alive, the chances of the spread of the disease are also alive. Others
may be affected by the disease if the individual is not handled properly.
Euthanasia removes economic burden from the family as it is a only a wastage of
time and money for the one who may not come back to life.
To
conclude my words here, I once again affirm that legalizing euthanasia may be a
boon to many terminal patients leading a vegetative life.

9. Answer any four of the following questions in 30-40 words: (2*5=10)
(a) What does the reference to chappals in
‘Lost Spring’ tell us about the economic condition of the rag pickers?
(b) What do we learn about the crofter’s
nature from the story, ‘The Rattrap’?
(c) How is ‘Shakespeare wicked and the map a
bad example’ for the children of the school in a slum?
(d) What picture of male chauvinism
(tyranny)do we find in the poem, ‘Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers’?
(e) How did the Governor, Oxford Prison
describe Evans to the Secretary Examination Board?
(f) At the dining table why did Zitkala-Sa
begin to cry when others started eating?
SOLUTION:
(a) The
reference to chappals tells us that the economic condition of the rag pickers
is very poor. They are so poverty stricken that they cannot buy even slippers
for themselves and roam about barefoot on the streets.
(b) He
was a very simple hearted, naive and hospitable person who welcomed the peddler
and offered him porridge and tobacco, though he was a total stranger to him.
Not only that but he shared his confidences also with him.
(c) Shakespeare
is wicked and map a bad example as both symbolize the material world full of
comforts and luxuries and thus kindle desires in their heart which they will never
be able to achieve in their whole life. As a result they are tempted to adopt
wrong ways to fulfil those desires.
(d) We
find a very conventional picture of male chauvinism in the poet such as we find
in a patriarchal society. The poem portrays that women do not have any
certainty in their lives and they lead a fearful life burdened by the
responsibilities of a wedded life.
(e) The
Governor said that Evans was dead keen on getting some academic qualification;
his full name was James Roderick Evans; he was a pleasant sort of fellow who
performed at the Christmas concert but was a kleptomaniac.
(f) Zitkala-
Sa begins to cry because whatever she was doing, was going wrong. First when
she sat on the chair, all were standing; when she stood up, all sat down; when
all were sitting with their head down reciting the prayer, she was looking here
and there. All this made her very much upset and she didn’t have the courage to
venture anything more.
10. Answer the following question in 120- 150
words:
Jansie is just as old as Sophie but
she is very different from her. Bring out the contrast between the two friends
citing relevant instances from the story. ‘Going Places.’ (6)
Ans: Jansie
and Sophie were classmates and friends. Both of them belonged to poor families
but their temperament, ideology and character was altogether different. Sophie
was an impractical girl always lost in unrealistic dreams without pondering
over its consequences. She told Jansie that she wanted to open a boutique after
leaving school and to arrange money, she would become a manager or she would
become an actress. Moreover, she was always lost in Danny Casey’s dreams. But
quite contrary to Sophie’s nature, Jansie was a practical girl. She knew that
they were earmarked for biscuit factory and she wanted Sophie not to indulge in
such dreams.
OR
What did the French teacher tell his
students in his last French lesson? What impact did it have on them?
Ans: M.
Hamel told the students about the order that had come from German. He told them
that it was going to be his last class and from the next day they would be
taught German. He tried to instill love for their language in their hearts. He
told them that French was the most beautiful language of the world, the
clearest and the most logical that they should guard it among them and hold
fast to it as it can be the key to their prison.
Listening
to his words, the students and the villagers became emotional.Their outlook was
completely changed. They realized their negligence and felt sorry for that.
11. Answer the following question in 120- 150
words: (6)
What are the similarities in the
lives of Bama and Zitkala-Sa though they belong to different cultures?
Ans: Both Bama and Zitkala- Sa are the
victims of racial discrimination. Though they belong to different communities,
cultures and lands but both of them bear the brunt of being born in a lower
community. Zitkala- Sa is a native American and her community is looked down
upon by the white people. They are treated like animals by them. She has to
suffer a lot of indignities; she is stared at, tossed like a puppet and her
hair is shingled. Similary Bama and the people of her community, because of
being born in a lower caste never get any honour or respect. They are exploited
by the upper caste people.
Both
Bama and Zitkala react in their own manner. Zitkala has to surrender as they
were powerful but Bama gets a little success by securing first position in the
class.
OR
How did the Tiger King meet his end? What
is ironical about his fate?
Ans: When the Tiger King was born the Chief
astrologer predicted that he will have to die one day and as he was born under
the hour of bull the death would be from tiger. Therefore when the Tiger King
came of age, he set out killing tigers. First he killed 70 tigers at a stretch
then he married a girl from a neighbourhood kingdom and killed 99 tigers but
the 100th tiger was nowhere to be seen. Finally, with the help of
Diwan he shot the 100th tiger but it did not die. The Tiger King
unaware of this fact played with his son with a toy tiger which became the
cause of his death.
The
irony with the king’s fate is that he killed 99 sturdy tigers but was killed by
a toy tiger.
