INVITATION

Being social creatures it is a part of our culture to celebrate and invite. An invitation is a short composition written in order to invite people to occasions like- wedding ceremony, birthday party, house warming, inauguration of a shop etc. The main components of an invitation are-
·         Name of the host
·         Name of the invitee
·         Occasion
·         Venue
·         Date
·         Time
·         Chief Guest (In case of official invitation)
There are two types of invitations—
A.    FORMAL INVITATION
It is written in the form of a card. The main characteristics of a formal letter are—
·         Meant for a lot of invitees
·         Written in third person
·         Abbreviations are not used
·         Written in one sentence
·         Central alignment is followed
·         Name of the invitee is not mentioned
·         Simple present tense is used
·         Put in a box
·         Written in 50 words
·         Inline commas can be used
·         End of line punctuation should not be used


B.     INFORMAL INVITATION
It is written in the form of a letter. The main characteristics of an informal letter are-
·         Meant for one person
·         Name of the invitee is mentioned
·         Name of the host is not mentioned
·         Simple present and simple future can be used

FORMATS

·         Formal phrase of invitation e.g.
Solicit your benign presence/ request the pleasure of your gracious presence/ seek your blessed presence
·         Date, time and venue
·         Occasion/ reason of invitation
·         R.S.V.P. at the left bottom. It mean ‘reply if you please.’ It should be followed by the name, address and phone no. of the host.
·         ‘With Best Wishes/ Compliments’ should be written at the right bottom followed by the expression ‘Near & Dear or Friends & Relatives’

COMMON MISTAKES IN NOTICE
1.         Most of the students begin with “This is to inform all the students ...” but if the notice is not for all the students this beginning goes wrong. So avoid haste and read the question properly.
2.         Most of the students avoid ‘the’ before ‘undersigned’ which is a mistake.
3.         Most of the students use the language “ the programme has organized or has been organized” which is wrong.

SECTION (B)

ADVANCE WRITING SKILLS                                   (30 marks)

NOTICE

A notice is a short composition written in order to inform people or pupils about some ensuing event. It can about a competition, exhibition, excursion, inauguration, meeting, show etc.It should always be to the point and formal without leaving any scope for any confusions and not violating the word limit (50words).
  •       Central alignment should be followed.
  •       Name & address of the institution can be written in the same line as well.
  •       Date can be written on any side.
  •      Up to title everything should be in capital/ block letters.
  •     Title should be underlined or highlighted.

·         The entire notice should be closed in a box and message should run from flush right to flush left.
·         Name and designation should be on the left hand side. Signature can also be put before the name.

CHECK POINTS
1.   There should be gap of around seven days between the date of issuing the notice and the date in the message.
2.   Time, date and venue must be clearly mentioned in the message.
3.   Don’t use the language “has/have organized” or “has/have been organized”
4.   If it is related to school, mention the name of the school first but in case of public notice write “Notice” in the beginning or name of the society if mentioned.
